CREW Files FEC Complaint Against Rep. Rob Andrews

Washington, D.C. – Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ) for using campaign funds to pay personal expenses for himself and his family. Based on a Newark Star-Ledger report and Rep. Andrews’ campaign finance reports, the complaint alleges the congressman illegally used tens of thousands of dollars contributed to his campaign to pay for a luxurious trip to Scotland to attend a donor’s wedding, a graduation party for one of his daughters, and to support his other daughter’s acting and singing career.

This is not the first time Rep. Andrews has broken the law by using campaign funds for personal expenses. In 2009, based on another CREW complaint, the FEC found he used campaign money to pay for his personal clothing, but - while requiring him to return the funds - let him off with a warning not to misuse campaign funds in the future. As before, Rep. Andrews has promised to repay his campaign fund for the costs of the trip to Scotland.

“Rep. Andrews keeps getting caught with his hand in his campaign’s cookie jar,” said CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan. “He seems to think he can break the law until he’s caught, and then avoid any consequences by paying the money back. It’s time for the FEC to stop this repeat offender, and send a strong message to candidates not to use other people’s donations to feather their nests.”
