Obama’s Refusal to Fix the Federal Election Commission Disappoints
In Washington, when you want to bury potentially embarrassing news or something you’re just not proud about, you release it late on a Friday. True to form, this past Friday the White House finally responded to our FEC petition in uninspiring and uninformative fashion, most likely in hopes to avoid news articles like this one.
As our letter to the president today states, the White House’s response – delivered just past 5:00 P.M. last Friday after a four-month wait – offered only vague, generic support for enforcement of our nation’s campaign finance laws. Clearly, after nearly four years in office, addressing the dysfunctional FEC remains a low priority. It was a disappointing and frustrating response to our petition, which garnered more than 27,000 signatures. Had we known from the outset how meaningless the White House considered the petitions, we would not have wasted our time.
All three branches of government have utterly failed to regulate the cash flooding our electoral system. Let down by our leaders, Americans have been forced to weather yet another election cycle without a functional campaign finance enforcement agency.
